Reality Bites: WMM's First Post of 2016

I’ve been inactive for too long. Over-a-year too long. Being overworked and wanting to write regularly again don’t go hand in hand. My entire schedule was out of whack last year. There was a non-existent work-life balance that I had succumbed to. Partially self inflicted because I allowed it. No fun. No fun at all, my friends.

Recently I had a rude awakening. While I was busy at work, I received a WhatsApp message from my sister informing me that my mum had a fall. See, I’m from a close-knit family, and we’re a small one. It was a rude shock because this was the incident one working afternoon:

*Note: Not for the faint hearted as I'll be revealing some mildly gory details.

-      Mumsy was on medication for dry cough that made her drowsy. She lost her balance and fell face first into a wooden chair. Face first! *^%k#&^%$!!

S   She told my aunt about it first instead of me because she didn’t want to disturb me at work. My aunt then informed my sister instead of me because she, too, didn’t want to disturb me at work. My sister (who lives in the USA, by the way) immediately informed me about this. God bless her for this. Thank you, Big Sister!

Bloody hell. No one wanted to inform me of this emergency because they “didn’t want to disturb me at work”?!? High time for a change, I thought.

I immediately informed my boss, packed up, and left for the day to be with mumsy. When I arrived to see her, it was a painful sight because she lay in bed resting with temporary bandages on her face. As I drew closer, my stomach was in knots because the bandages were no longer white; instead, they were red from the blood soaking into the material.

Mumsy had a bandage just above her eye and just below her chin. I could tell that the cut just below her chin was deep because that’s where the bandage was REALLY bloody.

My aunt and I took her to the clinic. Thankfully, there was only one patient before her turn and he was very quick. He was very, very grumpy towards mumsy, but his time with the doctor was brief. Whatever. My focus was mumsy. Side note: Grumpy uncle, I hope you’re feeling better now.

When her turn arrived, the nurse motioned for her to lie down so that she could clean the wounds before the doctor attends to her. This was my aunt’s cue to exit the room because she literally cannot see deep cuts/wounds and blood. All three of us walked in together because we’re family, and no one gets left behind.

Mumsy appears very calm as she’s lying in bed, but I can tell she’s very worried and nervous. The nurse removes the bandages and I see the cuts very clearly: the cut above her eye is quite deep that she can’t open her eye properly; the cut just below her chin is disturbingly deep that it looks like the skin forced itself to split open wide. I even caught sight of a bone. OMG, I felt like screaming and passing out! I needed to remain calm and composed – I can’t let my emotions rule my responses in this situation. Gotta be focused. I realise that mumsy has her eyes locked on me. Remain focused. While I was (falsely) assuring her that the cuts were not deep and that she would be just fine and dandy, she kept searching for the truth in my facial expression. While she was searching, I was rambling about my week and our traditional Chinese New Year Eve dinner coming up.

Success! She bought it. First mission accomplished! Crap, this was the easier part.

Now, the doctor comes in to tend to her cuts and tells her that she’s very lucky she sustained only cuts and not broken bones, or worse injuries. He needs to do some stitching. Uh oh…. this ain’t gonna be a good time for mumsy because he needs to inject her with local anesthesia first. I know this process quite well and I knew it would be a VERY painful one for her.

Anesthesia injected for the cut above the eye, check. It was bearable pain for mumsy. As he begins to (as gently as possible) inject the area just below her chin, I see her hands clamped so tightly to the sides of the bed, it looked like her veins would explode. And she’s groaning in pain. It was odd and painful for me because roles are now reversed. She used to be by my side when the doctor was cleaning my wounds or stitching me up…. and now… now, I need to keep her calm.

The room is dead silent at this point, you could hear a pin drop. Heck, you could probably hear everyone breathing at this point! So I did what came naturally to me: I gently stroked her legs and started humming to try to distract her from the pain and silence. Right on cue, the doctor and I are having a conversation about the song I’m humming. Mumsy is listening intently, and I see her grip on the sides of the bed slowly easing.

Anesthesia injected for the cut just below her chin, check. Second mission accomplished!

Mumsy needed several stitches for each cut, and she’s all stitched up nicely now. The doctor did a fantastic job with her! We take her back home and she’s relieved she doesn’t need to go to a hospital. We are all relieved. We kept her company while she ate something – her first meal of the day – then took her meds and slowly drifted to sleep.

Reality bit hard for me that day. It was very disturbing that my family members didn’t want to trouble me simply because I was at work and they didn’t want me taking time off (fearing that it would have an impact on me or my performance at work). Like I said earlier, high time for a change. No more overworking to the point where I have no life outside of work and am too exhausted to do anything but lay like a beach whale in bed. Enough.

More time for family. More time for friends. More time for me.

On a positively grand note, mumsy is recovering well. Thank God.

Amante Nail Spa & Body Care: Charity Fair

Hello, my beautiful friends!

Who says that beauty is only skin deep? Amante Nail Spa & Body Care, a superlative spa for women housing popular beauty and wellness needs, is proving that there is more to beauty than meets the eye.

They will be hosting a one-day Charity Fair on 7 September 2014 from 10 AM to 6 PM. In conjunction with this fair, customers can purchase the Amante Charity Coupon Booklet for RM 35 each. The booklet contains 7 x RM 5 cash vouchers that you can use to purchase spa treatments, and for food, activities, and games at Amante Charity Fair. There's also a BONUS thank you RM 88 Hot Stone Massage treatment!

Amante Charity Coupon Booklet on Sale for RM 35 Each

Proceeds from the Amante Charity Fair will be donated to Good Samaritan Home. It's a home for children in Malaysia. Amante believes that by helping to raise funds for this home, it would make learning possible for students of all ages, from pre-school to graduate school, providing basic education to those who need it most.

Good Samaritan Home is a non-profit charitable children’s home committed to serve the poor and needy children in our society. Their aim is to provide for the physical, spiritual, and educational well being of the children. The home started operating in January 1999 with just one child and currently has 32 resident children and another 30 children in the Extension Program.

Good Samaritan Home

I'd like to share with you a few photos of the children and their life stories.

These 4 boys came to the home 6 years ago. James and Thomas are now in a special school as their parents had lots of problem and the boys were left without proper food. In fact, James was locked up in his room for more than 7 months. This has effected them, and it was a challenge for the staff of the Home.

Gideon and Philip had no direction and discipline, and they became very difficult boys. Gideon lost both of his parents and had no interest in studies; Philip lost his dad and was placed from house to house.

With proper nutrition, a home-like environment, love, and guidance, they are picking up well. Philip received his results for UPSR, and he scored 3As and 4Bs. He has done very well given the fact that he came from such a troubling background.

Handsome Young Boys Getting Ready for Church on A Sunday Morning

College boys can be quite difficult to work with, at least from the Home's point of view. Reuben graduated as a Male Nurse on 23 November 2013, and got a job at Khoo Teck Huat Hospital.

He came to the home at the age of 7 and was a playful boy. He lost his dad when he was very young. Like other underprivileged children, he moved from one place to another.

Every child needs love and care regardless of their backgrounds and ages.
This is what Good Samaritan Home does for underprivileged children.

Seeing all theses boys sleeping together, calling each other "brother" is an inspiration to the Home. It has been their desire when they set up Good Samaritan Home to let these children have another family.

Daniel came to the home at the age of 6, and had a single mother. Now at the age of 21, he is doing his final year in Culinary Arts. He act as a big brother to all the children and they all call him "koko" (it means big brother in Cantonese). He acts as their big brother, helping them with their home work, showing them how things are done etc. His actions have inspired and motivated other boys and girls to feel at home.

Boys Together at Home

I'd like to invite you to join them on 7 September 2014 from 10 AM to 6 PM at Amante Kota Damansara to show your support for these amazing young children and to Good Samaritan Home.

The help that they have been receiving from donors and kind-hearted people have given them new hope. It will not be possible for the children to have a good environment, love, nutrition, and education without this help.

Here's how you can help:

1. Purchase the Amante Charity Voucher Booklet for RM 35 from the nearest Amante outlet. Visit www.amante.my for a list of locations near you.

2. Don’t have time? You can transfer/bank in to Amante Beauty Care Sdn Bhd (Maybank Account No: 512491131743). Send your transfer note/bank-in slip to amantecharity@gmail.com with your name, email address, and mobile number. You can collect your Amante Charity Coupon Booklet on 7 September 2014 at Amante Charity Fair.

Hygiene: How To Get Rid of Bad Breath from Onion or Garlic

Hey everyone!

Onion and garlic are delicious ingredients that can greatly enhance a dish, but their taste often comes with a cost to our breath.

I'm sure that all of us have had bad breath or spoken with someone with bad breath at some point in our lives.

Read this to learn instant strategies for removing evidence that you indulged in these tasty, but nasty buggers.

METHOD 1: FOOD and DRINKS THAT REMOVE ONION and GARLIC BREATH

Step 1: Use Mustard

Take a teaspoon of mustard and swish it in your mouth for a minute, then spit it out. Then, take another half teaspoon and swallow it. The mustard will go down to the stomach and kill the smell throughout the body.

Step 2: Eat Minty Foods

They freshen your breath.

Fresh parsley, mints, and mint tea can all remove the odour from onion and garlic. Gum with xylitol is expecially good for freshening your breath.

Step 3: Chew Gum

Adding more saliva to your mouth is key in getting rid of bad breath. Chewing gum, especially the ones with cinnamon, is great for covering up bad breath.

Step 4: Drink Fluids

Green tea, lemonade, and water can be helpful in washing out the odour from your mouth.

Step 5: Drink a Shot of Vodka

Try this ONLY if you're of the legal drinking age, are allowed to drink alcohol, and it doesn't conflict with your religious or personal belief(s).

Alcohol kills bacteria in the mouth, which remove bad breath. Believe it or not, Vodka is particularly good because it does not have a lingering aftertaste.

Especially to all you Vodka lovers out there, have a shot after a meal loaded with onions and garlic! ;)

METHOD 2: ADOPT A HYGIENE REMEDY

Step 1: Brush Your Teeth

Invest in a portable toothbrush and toothpaste if you frequently consume onion and garlic. Brushing your teeth definitely helps in freshening and clearing up your breath. Brush your teeth for at least 1 - 2 minutes.

Remember to clean your tongue too! Many people don't do this, but need to. The filaments on your tongue trap tiny particles and bacteria, which can cause bad breath. Regularly brushing your teeth and cleaning your tongue with a tongue cleaner or toothbrush after every meals helps.

Step 2: Use Mouthwash

Swish Listerine or Oral B or an equivalent brand around your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Repeat this step once or twice, depending on how bad your breath is.

Step 3: Floss

Gently clean the crevices of your teeth. Ideally, you should be doing this after every meal.

Here comes the gross part: whatever food you don't get rid of from your mouth continue rotting and festering in it. I carry a small dental floss in my handbag almost wherever I go. This helps me a lot!

Guardian or Watsons sell small dental floss that's convenient to carry around in your pocket or handbag.

For those of you who have sensitive gums, be especially gentle when flossing to prevent your gums from bleeding.

*     *     *     *     *     *     *

Some of these tips work in general for preventing bad breath, especially those listed under Method 2I hope they help you too.

Have a great week ahead, everyone! Be safe, be good, and have lotsa fun! :)

Skin-Care Tip: How to Stop Licking Your Lips (Part 2)

Hey everyone!

This post is useful for everyone - women, men, and, perhaps more so, parents. It's a follow up to my previous skin-care tip: How to Keep Your Lips Moist.

Do you ever lick your lips constantly because they are dry? Do you have kids who do this constantly? If you said "yes" to either one or both of these questions, that's a bad habit that should stop. Read on to learn why.

Licking your lips constantly can develop into a rash that leaves a red ring around your mouth, which can irritate and cause pain. Needless to say, it's definitely not a handsome sight having a red ring around your mouth.

Please don't confuse this post with my previous one - the previous post was about keeping your lips healthy and moist; this post is about the effects of continuously licking your lips.

Some people do have this condition, whereby they keep licking their lips so frequently until a red ring forms around their mouths. This is usually common with kids. One of my precious loved ones, who was in his early teens, kept licking his lips that kept getting more and more dry because of the licking. This continued until it developed into a rash around his mouth (like in the first photo below). :(

(Chapped Lips, Photo Credit: http://www.wisegeek.com/)

There's no need to panic, though. Let me inform you that this condition is not contagious and can be cured. If you know of anyone who has it, please be kind and don't shun them. :)

These are some ways to help get rid of the nasty red ring around the mouth:

Step 1: Use Vaseline

Apply Vaseline to the affected area each morning and night as it helps moisturise your lips. Avoid using flavoured Vaseline because it will only make you want to lick it off.

Step 2: Drink Water

Yes, here we go with water again. :p

It's important to keep your lips moist. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily.

Step 3: Use a Medicated Lip Balm

Apply a medicated lip balm on your lips before having a shower or bath. The steam from the hot water will lock into your lips, making them less dry.

Burt's Bees has a medicated lip balm that is pretty decent, but pricey for the size. My precious used this and it worked for a while - it helped a bit, but he continued licking his lips even with the balm. Naturally, his condition got worse and we had to consult a doctor. I can't recall how much we bought it for, though. If I'm not mistaken, it cost us between RM 30.00 and RM 50.00 for a very small, thin tube.

Step 4: Mind The Cold Weather

For those of you living in cold climates, be especially careful when it's cold outside. Put on plenty of chapstick. Extremely cold weather conditions can cause very dry and cracked lips.

If you live in a fully air conditioned home or sleep in an air conditioned room, it helps to take note of this tip. Applying a lip balm while you're in the comfort of your home prevents dry and cracked lips.

*     *     *     *     *     *     *

For kids who have this condition, parents will need to experiment with different methods to stop them from licking their lips. Usually, kids will stop when the rash begins to hurt. Parents, do your best to prevent it from reaching this stage because it can be very uncomfortable for your kids. My precious no longer has this condition, has learned to stop licking his lips, and has beautiful, healthy, plump pink lips. Love you, baby! :D

If the condition doesn't improve, I'd strongly recommend consulting a doctor.

I hope this helps all of you. Let me know your thoughts/comments/feedback. As always, I'd love to hear from you.

Have a blessed weekend, everyone! Be safe, be good, and have loads of fun! :)

Skin-Care Tip: How to Keep Your Lips Moist (Part 1)

Hey everyone!

Who among you would like to have naturally soft, kissable lips? Me! Me!! Meeee!!

I've several steps for all you women and men to follow and you'll be on your way to achieving this. Read on! To those of you who smoke, you'll definitely want to read this because smoking causes seriously dry lips!

Step 1: Do Not Lick Your Lips Constantly

Contrary to what some people believe, licking your licks ends up drying them out by subjecting them to your drying saliva, which contains food particles and other skin drying elements when exposed to Oxygen. Say what?

What this basically means is that the more you lick your lips, the more dry your lips become. To make matters worse, it also causes chapping. Yikes! Do you really want that?

Here, try this for yourself: leave your lips bare (ie. free of lip balm, lipstick, or any lip product) for a while. Then, when you feel they're getting dry, lick your lips, then let them dry completely. Repeat the steps a few more times. Now, feel what happens.

Step 2: Use a Lip Balm

There are many lip balms or lip moisturises that work quite well. You could also try beeswax versions - they are cheaper and last, but are not good if you are allergic to honey. You have been forewarned. Stay away from beeswax lip balms if you're allergic to honey, honey! ;)

For the men, you always have the option of using unscented, unflavoured, clear lip balm. So there are no excuses. :p

For the make-up enthusiasts, besides moisturising your lips, lip balms are great because they make applying your lipstick much easier!

Step 3: Drink Lots of Water

Ideally, we should all be drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily. This makes perfect sense because a hydrated body will have naturally moist lips. Bla bla bla bla bla... Yes, yes, we're all aware that we need to drink loads of water, but how many of us actually do this DAILY? :p

Here's the wonder of water: drinking a lot of water hydrates your body and balances your body temperature, which in turn moisturise your lips and help give you clear skin. Now, THAT'S what we want! So drink up, people!

Step 4: Avoid Skin-Drying Products

Be careful of the type of lipstick or lip gloss that you wear - make sure that they are not the source of drying out your lips. Only you will know if your lippie products are drying your lips, so be alert.

*     *     *     *     *     *     *

I hope these tips help you in attaining gorgeous, kissable lips.

If the condition of dry lips persists or gets worse, please consult a doctor.

Until my next post, big kisses to all of you! :) xx

Hygiene Tip: Breath Test

Hey everyone!

Do you suffer from bad breath? Perhaps you know of someone who does?

Have you had the unfortunate experience talking with someone and wondering what they consumed to have such bad breath?

Or worse, have you ever worried about your breath before kissing your partner on the lips?

I know I have. Heck, I may have even been guilty of it at some point! I find myself wondering sometimes throughout the day (especially when I'm busy at work, which is pretty much most of the time) how my breath is.

We can stop wondering, my lovelies! I've a simple tip for you to check for your breath. Remember these 3 little words: lick your wrist

That's right.

Turn to your right, and now to your left. Then, turn to the back and to the front again. Make sure no one's looking. Now, lick it. :p

This is what you'll need to do:

Lick the inside of your wrist, let it dry completely, then give it a whiff. If the scent is bad, chances are that your breath isn't delightful either.

That's it!

Don't believe me? Try it and you'll be surprised.

Have a great weekend, everyone! Be good. Be safe. Have fun! :)

This time around, I bought 11 (count that: ELEVEN) items at Elianto for only RM132.50!

Eye & Lip Make-up Remover, Kabuki Brush & Lip Gloss

This is the first time I've used Elianto's eye and lip make-up remover and I like it! It has a subtle scent, isn't very oily and removes make up well.

I've been wanting to get a Kabuki brush from Sephora or M.A.C, but when I saw this baby on sale at Elianto, I grabbed it! This brush applies powder very well. Definitely value for money!

The lip gloss is pretty nice too. It has a very pretty pinkish/brownish colour that glides well on your lips. And it's so inexpensive!! Value for money for this too, people!

Eyeshadows

I really LIKE Elianto's colours and textures. They apply well, look good, and are inexpensive! They also stay on long - make sure you use an eyelid primer/concealer/base first. I'd definitely recommend these!

Blusher

This is a nice slightly shimmery, marble blusher that applies well and leaves a glow on your cheeks. I tried it and you need to apply only a little to have the subtle colour and glow. Try it!

Nail Colour Remover & Nail Colours

I've used their nail colours before and they apply well and look good. The black is interesting because it's a crackle nail colour that leaves a "cracked" look on your nails.

Nail Colour in 02 White
Crackle Nail Colour in 02 Black

Fan Brush & Sinma Nail Colours

The 3 nail colours on the right are from Sinma. They apply well and look alright. You'd need at least 3 or 4 coats to see the colours, though. I wouldn't recommend these.
